There are no fences between these reserves; in fact there are no boundary fences within the Kruger which allows free movement of wildlife between a conservation area of more than 4,500,000 ha. Thus opportunities to see ‘The big 5’ (elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard and lion; including the infamous and naturally occurring white lions), as well as rarer hyena and hunting dog and the plethora of bird species, are rife.
The area is characterized as ‘Savannah bushveld’ with 6 different landscape types: acacia woodland, open woodland, mopane (a tree sp.) woodland, combretum (bush willows) woodland, mixed combretum woodland and mixed veld on Gabbro (rock). Rivers, water holes and dry river beds intersect the veld. This mixture of geography supports an array of biodiversity that students will be introduced to.The area has a sub-tropical climate that features two seasons: a summer wet season (October – March) with the majority of rain falling between December and February. This is also the hottest time of the year, with temperatures in the region of 32 °C. A typical summer day will be hot with storm clouds gathering for a spectacular late afternoon isolated thunderstorm. The winter dry months (April – September) the weather is dry with little chance of rain. As game tends to congregate around dwindling water sources, game viewing is more predictable. Temperatures can range from 28°C to 10°C in one day. The mornings and evenings can be very cold and warm clothing is advised
