Chala Wote Festival – Accra, Ghana

Chala Wote is one of Africa`s most popular and most internationally known festival. What makes it so unique is the fact that it brings international and local artist together on the same platform in so many different genres. There is music, art, drama and of course amazing food, which to me is a sign of a really amazing festival. Let`s explore this vibey festival in-dept.

Since its beginning in 2011 this festival has included street painting, graffiti murals, photography, theatre, spoken word, interactive art installations, live street performances, extreme sports, film shows, a fashion parade, a music block party, recyclable design workshops and much more. All of this in the streets of Accra in Ghana. As you can imagine it is bright and the atmosphere is one of joy and genuine appreciation.

The event use to only be one or two days long but in 2016 they changed that to a week and this in turn changed the whole dynamic of the festival for the better. Now art studios and theatre all over the city and even other cities in Ghana have gotten involved and started partaking. This is most of all an amazing platform for the infinite well of talent that is Ghana.

The idea of this festival is actually very cool. They do not only want to literally bring art to the street, they figuratively speaking want to bring the streets to art. They aim to break the assumption that art can only be created and enjoyed by the high class. They want art to be a way for Africa to turn our suffering into something beautiful and at the same time help us out of the suffering. They want to save Africa with art!
